7th Annual Pumphouse 5K and Open House in celebration of Drinking Water Week at White Rock Pump Station, May 8, 1999

A fun-filled day has been planned for families with young children, exercise enthusiasts, history buffs, environmentalists, and people who want to learn more about the North Texas water supply, and people who just want to know what goes on inside that beautiful old red-brick building on the southwest shore of White Rock Lake.

The historic White Rock Pump Station — located in a park-like setting adjacent to a jogging trail — will be the backdrop for the celebration. In addition to the Pumphouse 5K, a race and fitness walk that benefits Operation WaterShare, family-oriented activities at the Open House will include: children’s activities; lively music, tours of the pump station; self-guided tours of a xeriscape demonstration garden; self-guided tours of the old fish hatchery area (an excellent bird-watching site); informative and educational environmental exhibits; and free mini-seminars packed with information on topics ranging from how Dallas drinking water is cleaned to environmental issues, to how people can create their own water-saving xeriscape landscape, plus other topics related to using water wisely.

Presentation of Blue Thumb awards, to citizens who have made outstanding contributions to protect Dallas’ water supply, will be made at approximately 9:45 a.m. The Open House, which is free to the public, ends a week-long celebration of Drinking Water Week. It will take place on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the White Rock Pump Station, 2900 White Rock Road. For more information, call (214) 670-4022.
