On your rain barrel collection system - good job, by the way - it looks like the two halves of the support structure aren't tied together? I'd be concerned that the top - where the barrels sit - would spread apart over time, leading to a collapse. Also - I can't tell if he structure is anchored to the garage, but that might be a good idea. Thanks for posting the videos! I'm stealing some of your ideas for my own garden! :-)

@sppeart
The only area where the two boards are tied together are on the end where the white barrel is at. I have two 2x2 boards under this barrel to raise it up by just a bit - because of the overflow pipe. This will allow all of the other barrels to fill up an additional 2 inches or so before water starts going down the overflow.

In regards to the boards separating over time - it may be possible, but with that much weight sitting on them, I don't see it as likely. They are also anchored in the ground with concrete.

The structure isn't tied to the garage; I didn't want to put any holes in the garage for this - so it is free-standing.

You have some great looking dirt. I bet your system works great! I hope to build something very small to start to see how this works. Great work, you've given me some more ideas.

I am glad I found this, do you have a basement under your house? I was considering a garden along my foundation also but have always been concerned with (over)watering issues and moisture too close to the basement walls.

I also agree, that soil looks great. I assume you are somewhere in the south.

@derv88
Hi derv. We do have a basement under the house. It is tricky to ensure you do not overwater your plants next to the house. It works great for the plants though because the house also helps to warm up the soil temperature and allow for quicker germination. We are actually in the Midwest.

@badboyorganics
Devin, the pipes will not have any water in them when winter comes around. I'll take all of the pipes apart that are in the garden and store them in the garage over the winter - then put them back together depending on how I arrange the garden for the next year. So, no worries about frozen pipes. The rain barrels are also fully drained and disconnected from each other to prevent any damage as well.
