What is the best way to dispose of a Culligan water conditioner too old?
This unit is a "Mark 2" water conditioner, and was in the house when I bought a couple years ago. Consists of three tanks, each about 3.5 meters tall, one wider than the others. Several indications are that at least twenty years. Despite being hooked into the plumbing, I doubt you are doing nothing, and I suspect there is a control unit that allows water is bypassed. It's as old and apparently non-maintained that I have no confidence anyway. I do not even know I * * a water conditioner, but I want to get a new filter for the whole house. I just want them gone. Who I can get to remove this thing? Any old plumber? I contacted a man Culligan by email but no answer yet (it's the weekend). I'm curious about the elimination rate and if the thing would be of no value to the Culligan dealer. Thanks
The old unit will be of no value to Culligan, although you may be able to get a trade in seal the deal for a new one. The brand with the two usually has only two parts, the media tank and brine tank. I suspect the third piece is a filter. Since the conditioner is regenerative, it may well continue to operate. The brine tank should be cleaned and filled with rock salt or salt blocks. Pellets Salt does not work well. The following is backwashing and regeneration. You need to check to see that the timer is running, and the filter may be necessary to clean or replace. There should be no problem getting the old unit to ask the installers of the new unit. Just make sure it is part of the deal. Will be very motivated to sell a new unit. Never take the fist offer. Depending the hardness of your water, a unit of whole house can be great for your bathroom, laundry, skin, even the car wash (dry without water spots). It is also good skin, and may even clear up some skin diseases. They are not great for drinking water due to the means used to regenerate. I would suggest a reverse osmosis system Conversely under the sink, or at least a Brita or Pur filter on the countertop or faucet. Other things to consider. If you have a reguator pressure on its water system allowing the pressure to ignore when the water heater turns on, and not bypass after the system is installed and working. This can cause the valve pressure relief water heater for free, make your toilet running, or damage solenoid valves icemakers, dishwashers and washing machines. A pressure tank economic expansion will take care of these problems. I was a contractor, and installed many of these and other systems, including the United Rainsoft Hydroquad Standard (the best, but expensive.) Bet this is probably more than you wanted to know.
