I hope to enjoy clean water, clean refreshing as a spring skiing in the commercials … but if you have to drink from a pond or stream below in the valleys or the plains as 99.99% of us, these tips can help.
If you do not have bottled water, you should boil water to make it potable. Boiling water will kill most organisms causing diseases that may be present. If water is cloudy, filter through clean cloths or allow it to settle and remove the clear water for boiling. If you can not boil water, you can disinfect with household bleach. Bleach will kill some but not all, types of disease-causing organisms that may be in the water. If the water is cloudy, filter through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and remove the clear water for disinfection. Backpacking boiling water purification is easily kills the bacteria giardia. It is not necessary to do it for five minutes, as some states of the literature. Simply bring the water to boil and giardia be dead. The general rule is to add one minute for each increase of 1,000 above sea level. This is probably most important if you are concerned about waterborne giardia organisms other than – as typhoid fever. Giardia is very easy to kill with heat. I recommend a great one for boiling water purification is to ensure that water is actually boiling – A point boiling with large bubbles rising and shaking the pan. It's amazing how many people think that very few small bubbles at the bottom of a pot is boiling. That is not boiling. That's just a few bubbles.
